Thailand flooding
driving hard drive prices
UP!
As you may be aware, Thailand has seen a
Monsoon season that started in July and is continued up to the
present day. We have
received the following pictures showing Western Digital’s largest
manufacturing plant submerged in the flood waters that are now
beginning to flood Bangkok.
This has impacted the hard drive market considerably since
receiving these photos on Oct 21 we have seen hard drive prices
raise 20 to 100%. The
majority of the hard drive manufacturers are no longer honoring
their contractual agreements due to a clause called “An act of
nature”. Current estimates
have the factories in Thailand resuming operation in early spring,
meaning hard drive prices are sure to continue climbing.
This price increase is sure to have an effect on new computer
prices very soon. If
you are contemplating need of a hard drive or new computer system in
the near future you may reconsider your timing based on this
information.
